SpaceX's move to sell wireless service directly over its Starlink network turns a carrier partner into a rival. The news sent T-Mobile down about 10% Friday morning, AT&T nearly 7% and Verizon more than 5%, erasing about $41 billion in market value among the three, and European telecom shares fell too. The cell-tower REITs that lease antenna sites to those carriers went the other way. Crown Castle jumped about 10%, American Tower about 7% and SBA Communications about 6%, as investors treated SpaceX as a likely future tenant rather than a threat. That split shows this isn't a simple flight from dividend-paying stocks: the tower REITs also pay hefty dividends and carry heavy debt, and they're rallying.
Much of the market is moving on company news rather than broad themes. The government's 2027 star ratings for Medicare Advantage plans lifted insurer Humana about 12%, adding roughly $5.5 billion in value, while insurer Alignment Healthcare sank about 19%. Health-care stocks overall are up nearly 2%. Options traders are betting on more days like this: the expected swings in individual stocks are at the top of their recent range, while the expected swings in the broad index stay calm. Bets on stocks moving in lockstep over the next month sit near their lowest in 20 years.
Gold is climbing even though a firmer dollar and a rising two-year Treasury yield, now about 4.8%, are working against it. Spot gold is up about 1.3%, near $4,190. The likely spark is the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey, which fell to 46.3 from 48.1, below forecasts, while year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.7%. Oil barely moved after Trump pledged not to strike Iran before the November 3 midterms, with U.S. crude near $92. A Bloomberg report that OpenAI expects annualized revenue of at least $70 billion by December lifted software stocks, but chipmakers haven't recovered Thursday's losses. The New York Fed's growth estimate, due at 12:45 p.m., is expected to hold near 2.5% for the fourth quarter.
SpaceX is using its Starlink network to move from carrier partner to direct competitor in wireless service. That has knocked T-Mobile (TMUS) down -9.97%, AT&T (T) -6.71% and Verizon (VZ) -5.53% WSJ. The three have lost $41.1B of market value between them, and European telecom shares are falling too WSJ.
The factor model attributes almost none of this to style. T-Mobile's stock-specific loss is -10.06%; the market's small lift partly offsets it. AT&T's stock-specific loss is -6.24%. Verizon is the only carrier where style matters: it accounts for -1.08% of the drop, mostly through Dividend Yield.
Crown Castle (CCI) is up +10.38%, American Tower (AMT) +7.16% and SBA Communications (SBAC) +6.02%. AMT and CCI alone have added $8.6B of market value. Crown Castle's factor exposures, mainly heavy debt and a lack of growth, pulled it down -0.41%, but its +10.66% stock-specific gain swamped that. The price action treats SpaceX as a likely future tenant for the tower REITs, not a threat to them. The Real Estate SPDR (XLRE) is trading at 2.2× its typical session pace.
With the ten-year Treasury yield at 5.27% CNBC, the carrier selloff could look like investors dumping bond-like stocks. Dividend Yield is down -0.25% at z=-1.5, its third down day in five, and AT&T and Verizon are among the highest-yielding names in the universe. But the tower REITs also have high payouts and heavy debt, and they are rallying. That rules out a broad sale of bond proxies as the driver.

Stock-specific moves account for 76.9% of today's cross-sectional variance against a 65.3% one-year average. Style factors explain 12% against a 22% norm. Yesterday they explained 45%, when the high-beta, high-momentum stocks sold off. That group of names is up +0.48% today against +0.21% for the rest of the market, an ordinary session that neither extends nor reverses the slide.
The 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) delivered the second single-name shock. Humana (HUM) is up +12.07%, adding $5.5B, and Alignment Healthcare (ALHC) is down -18.51%. Health Care is up +1.69%. Apple (AAPL), down -2.19%, has lost $110.2B, more than the three carriers combined. Almost all of Apple's move is stock-specific. Nikkei Asia reported that Apple cut October component orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max by at least 15% from its original request, citing softer demand after a $100 price increase. Nikkei Asia
Options traders are paying for days like this. Implied single-stock volatility (Cboe VIXEQ) is 40.21, at the top of its 20-session range, while implied index volatility (Cboe VIX) is 15.1. Single-stock options usually price larger company-specific moves heading into earnings season, and third-quarter reports began this week with PepsiCo and Delta. Realized 20-day correlation between stocks is still near its since-2020 lows, at the 4.6th percentile. Options expect even less co-movement over the next month: implied correlation (Cboe COR1M) is 7.11, in the bottom 0.94% of its 20-year history.

Gold, at +0.53% (z=+1.6), is on pace for a return in the 97.9th percentile of daily moves since 2020. Spot gold is $4,188 at 10:16 AM ET, +1.31% CNBC. It is climbing against two headwinds: the dollar index is up +0.17% at 102.31 CNBC, and the two-year Treasury yield is up 5.2 basis points at 4.81% CNBC. Of the morning's data, only the Michigan survey's jump in inflation expectations points toward a hedge bid. U.S. yields are rising even as eurozone yields fall after the French bond selloff WSJ.
Trump's pledge not to strike Iran before the November 3 midterms has barely moved crude NYT. WTI is at $91.60 at 10:06 AM ET, +0.12% CNBC.

China ADRs are trading at more than four times their usual pace (KWEB, FXI), and no single catalyst for the move has turned up. Hedge-Fund Ownership is up +0.14% (z=+1.3), and it is also positive before stripping out other factors, so the names hedge funds hold most heavily are genuinely ahead today. Several of those, including Kaspi (KSPI) and Full Truck Alliance (YMM), are China-linked.
Bloomberg reported that OpenAI expects annualized revenue of at least $70 billion by December Bloomberg. So far the relief has gone to software (IGV) rather than chips (SMH), and the Semiconductors factor is down -0.35%, its fourth down day in five. The forecast eased the revenue scare, but chip stocks have not recovered Thursday's losses.
The University of Michigan's preliminary October consumer sentiment index, released at 10:00 AM ET, fell to 46.3 from 48.1, below the 47.6 consensus data.sca.isr.umich.edu.
