Goldman's Tech Buying Shows Up in Beta, Not Momentum

August 4, 2026 · 17:03 ET

Goldman Sachs Prime Brokerage reported the largest single-day net buying of US technology stocks in three months — flows through Monday’s session at the latest, as Bloomberg reported — and the factor data says precisely where that buying has been landing. Beta was the day's load-bearing style at +1.87% (z=+1.9), the high-beta momentum names ran +4.01% against +1.02% for the rest of the market, and Short-Term Momentum finished at z=-1.3. This is the middle of the recovery rather than its opening move: the same names entered today 18.9% below their high as of yesterday's close.

The Desk Number and the Factor Answer

The claim, reported August 4 and covering flows through Monday’s session at the latest: Goldman Sachs Prime Brokerage recorded fundamental long/short net leverage at 69.2%, a z-score of +1.1 against the trailing year, with gross up 180bps to 248% and Information Technology bought at the fastest clip since May. The bundle carries a second Goldman reading for the week ending August 1 that puts the book at 208.1% gross and 52.8% net; take the direction from these numbers, not the level. Our side of the ledger is independent and runs through today’s session: Beta +1.87% (z=+1.9) with 6.7% conditional importance, Residual Volatility +0.64% (z=+1.3), and a cross-section in which the high-beta momentum names — the group that acted as the proxy for the late-July deleveraging — put up +4.01%, a 96th-percentile session since 2020, while everything outside the screen managed +1.02%.

Beta Bought, Winners Left Alone

Short-Term Momentum ran -0.41% (z=-1.3) and Long-Term Momentum -0.11%, so the sorting variable today was market sensitivity, not a twelve-month track record. That distinction has names attached. Wolfspeed rose +9.65% with essentially none of it stock-specific, Penguin Solutions +9.31% with the stock's own move slightly negative, and Marvell +11.51% of which roughly seven points was factor carry. MTUM's +3.06% is the same phenomenon wearing a momentum label — the ETF holds what beta lifted. Semiconductors as a theme contributed almost nothing on a residualized basis (z=+0.5), which is the useful thing to know about a day when SMH closed the regular session +5.50%.

That 20-day slope is the reason this matters more than a one-day bounce. Beta's variance share over the blended five-day window sits at 31.0 vol points, the 99.3rd percentile since 2020, and 22.8 points over twenty days at the 98.1st — the cross-section has been organizing itself along the market-sensitivity axis for weeks, first punishing the high-exposure names and now paying them. Realized style volatility of 29.6 vol points ranks 97.4th percentile since 2020 while index volatility runs 12.3 points at the 25.8th, and implied single-stock volatility (Cboe VIXEQ) at 45.73 towers over VIX at 16.5. Underneath a calm index, factor risk is doing nearly all the work.

The Short Side Is Its Own Leg

Short Interest at z=+1.9 and Short-Sale Activity at z=+2.0 both ran positive, which happens rarely: these are the model's largest annualized drag and its most statistically reliable effect respectively, and both pay the other way on a normal day. The most heavily shorted names averaged +2.9% in the top bucket, and yesterday's most heavily short-sold names beat the barely-shorted ones T+1. This is not the same trade as the beta bid — the high-beta momentum names screen modestly less shorted than the universe (-0.53σ on short interest, -0.50σ on prior-session short-sale flow), and short interest correlates -0.15 with the group's membership. Two separate pressures on the same day. The context is a market where S&P 500 short interest has reached a record 3.7% of index free float, the highest since 2010 by Citi's read, and where SpaceX carries a $24.6bn short position into an August 6 lockup expiry ahead of its first public results tonightBloomberg.

What the Data Won't Confirm

Our ownership lens does not corroborate an ownership-specific bid. Hedge-Fund Ownership finished slightly negative on a residualized basis (z=-0.9) and +0.11% on a raw basis: the names hedge funds own rose about as much as their beta and momentum tilts already explain, and nothing beyond. In yesterday's session the high-beta momentum names traded on light volume, roughly 0.73 times the market's pace, with the easiest-to-sell names leading (+3.96% in the top liquidity third against +2.23% in the bottom); today's move spread across the group in its usual proportion rather than concentrating in the most profile-fitting names. Prices are moving faster than shares are changing hands, which bounds how strong a releveraging story the equity data alone can support. Coatue's hedge fund, down 8.3% in July and still up 14.3% on the yearBloomberg, is a reminder of what the buying is digging out from. And the day's biggest AI print went the wrong way: AMD grew revenue 50% with data-center sales doubling and still fell more than 10% after the bellCNBC.

The Prints Under the Index

Idiosyncratic risk still accounted for 63.6% of cross-sectional variance, and the single-name list explains why. Palantir closed +29.49% and gave back -1.66% after the bell on 93% revenue growth and raised full-year guidanceBloomberg, adding $85.6bn of market value with 24.2 points of the move its own; Zebra Technologies +26.34% and Gartner +23.24% on beats and raisesBloomberg; Wayfair +29.67% on its strongest US growth since 2020Bloomberg. On the other side, Bruker fell -21.39% on a revenue miss and cut sales guidanceBloomberg. Resideo's -27.88% session print is not a repricing of the business: the NYSE said ADI Global Distribution began trading today after its spin-off from Resideo, and the print should be read as structure, not news.

Energy remains the quiet counterweight to all of it. Crude fell hard on Qatar's signal of a draft short-term US-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of HormuzBloomberg, with Brent settling around $79, its lowest since July 10Bloomberg. USO fell -5.89% and BP -3.92%, yet the residualized Oil factor moved just -0.13% (z=-0.3) — the energy complex is repricing as a sector, not as a factor exposure the rest of the market has to hedge. Realized 20-day correlation of 7.97% remains pinned near its lows, the 3.0th percentile since 2020, though the five-day gauge at 15.06% now sits in the 79.4th percentile of the trailing three months. Single stocks are still trading on their own stories; the fast window says slightly less so than a week ago.

Economic Context

The JOLTS bls.gov report, released at 10:00 AM ET, showed June job openings at 7.359 million against a 7.45 million consensus and a revised 7.537 million prior, with the quits rate steady at 2.0% and hiring up to 5.35 millionBloomberg. Treasuries rallied across the curve on the miss: the 10-year fell 7.3bps to 4.611% and the 2-year 6.2bps to 4.194%, with the 30-year at 5.171%CNBC. TLT gained +0.95% against a 20-day return of -3.82%, and the dollar was unchanged at 99.88CNBC — a softer labor print delivered a duration bid without a currency move, which leaves the equity story where the factor data put it.
